An ABI Research finding claims that around 565 million high frequency RFID tags ICs were shipped last year.



The research firm explains the shipments of high frequency ISO14443 tag ICs have grown to 104 percent from first quarter 2005 to first quarter 2006. It is the highest growth rate of any segment.

The high growth is mainly due to large-scale use of contactless payment cards and personal identification documents including e-passportrs.



Meanwhile, the US government will issue RFID enabled e-passports to its citizens despite security concerns. Other countries are also interested to introduce epassports for their citizens. The report says it would further boost the selling of RFID tags.
