IBM and Marnlen RFID have put together their resources to develop privacy-enabled RFID tags for item-level tagging. These new tags are called Clipped Tags because these are designed by applying Clipped Tag privacy technology of IBM.
The Clipped Tag technology enables the users to tear off a part of the tag to bring down its read-range. At the same time, the customers can easily notice the tag’s modification. In this way, the Clipped tags ensure consumer privacy while providing the benefits of RFID technology.
IBM Research claims that the Clipped Tag puts privacy protection into the hands of the consumer. It gives the consumer a visual confirmation of the tags’ modification. Toronto-based Marnlen is manufacturing RFID products using the Clipped technology.
