Supermarkets are testing RFid tags that could be used for tracking shoppers in the store and keep watch on goods after customers have taken them home. These tags are based on RFid technology and can be used to monitor products from warehouses to shelves. Some experts are of the opinion that this technology would be replacing barcodes by 2015. These miniature tags contain antenna and silicon chips which transmit information to a receiver. Consumer groups in America fear that this could be used for amassing detailed data on their buying pattern and build a database of their social circles by tracking products that have been passed on to other people. The consumer groups want that all tags be de-activated after the product has been purchased.
