The speculation is that US government’s discussion to introduce RFID chips in the new border-crossing cards would boost demand of RFID technology in both the USA and other countries. However, implementation is the big question.

Like new US passports, the PASS Card would also include RFID chips. If everything goes well, then the demand for RFID tags would be go up. Particularly, several million units of RFID chips would be in demand in the North America alone.

As known earlier, the US State Department has decided to track some 120 million people who cross the border between Texas and Mexico every year. The government considers implementation of RFID-supported PASS Cards would bring down the flow of illegal immigrants into the national territory.

However, the State Department is facing major obstacles while implementing the RFID PASS Card system.

The major challenge before the State Department is how to move the Department of Homeland Security who contradicts the State Department regarding kind of RFID tags to be put in for the program.

Meanwhile, the Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and The Cato Institute have opposed the RFID idea on the ground that ID tags are costly and pose looming threat to individual privacy.
