RFID technology in USA gets a major set back with researchers of the newly set up RFID Consortium for Security and Privacy (CUSP) have reportedly hacked RFID-empowered contactless credit cards.
The Research group claims the information stored in the credit cards can be read without the knowledge of the holders. The information includes names, card numbers and expiration dates from credit cards.
Therefore, RFID technology is insecure. It can be used as a tool to break individual privacy, the researchers said while submitting their first research report on behalf of CUSP.
Tom Heydt-Benjamin, a member of the Consortium states,
Every single RFID credit card and debit card that I have ever seen in my lab has revealed at the least the full user name and card expiration date, and the vast majority also revealed the full credit card number.
As on now, there are nearly 20 million RFID-enabled cards issued by the financial institutions like American Express and MasterCard. With this disclosure, the holders of these cards are skeptical over the credibility of this technology.
