Barley few days are left for the US government to introduce much talked new RFID-enabled passports for the citizens, the security experts have vented their critical notes on this move. It is very likely the US State Department may change its decision on RFID passports idea.
The Security firm Flexilis was in the forefront to disparage the RFID Passport at the Black Hat confab 2006. It warned that the RFID passports would provide many opportunities to the criminals to access confidential data of the citizens. They can read the RFID tags from a close distance. They can also develop explosives that would detonate in the proximity of certain passports.
Flexilis distributed copies of a 4-minute video of a test of Mahaffey’s RFID-passport-explosive-device at the Black Hat. It showed the shielding used on the passport RFID tags is inadequate.
Like Flexilis, other security experts at Black Hat have also disagreed with the RFID enabled passports. They feel that US should think seriously the imminent threat of this controversial technology before giving its thumb.
