A recent study shows that global airline industry spends nearly $750million for the compensation of Airport baggage theft and mishandling. The reason is outdated bar code tags that are less reliable or not reliable to track the passengers and their belongings.
Therefore, the researchers everywhere are at work to harness the power of RFID technology for the large-scale deployment of RFID tags in air operations.
The scientists at University College London are a step ahead in this direction. They are now developing a system, which would combine RFID tags and CCTV cameras to track the movements in busy airports and big airports like the Airbus A380 that carries up to 700 passengers.
They are developing RFID software for the EU-funded Optag project. The prime objective of the project is to assist the airlines authorities to track passengers and ensure them to reach departure gate on time.
Besides implementing in the air ports, this system can also be put in the theme parks to search out missing children or delegates in large conference centres.
