Singapore becomes the first Asian country to utilize RFID technology in lifestyle and hospitality industry.

The leading Asian country is opening a RFID Hospitality Management Systems (Rhymes) Center to develop applications for this purpose. Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Symbol Technologies, Millenium & Copthorne and Sun Microsystems are all joining in the Rhymes.

Acknowledging the potentialities of RFID technology, the center has developed three applications to help the life style and hospitality industries to serve their customers.

They have started a self-service check-in and check-out system using RFID cards. These cards will get rid of queue times for frequent hotel guests. The centre has also developed a baggage system, which utilizes RFID tags to track luggage deposited at the hotel. This system prevents thefts in the hotel.

The applications will be marketed by the end of the year.
