Sweden-based mining company LKAB has adopted the RFID enabled safety system from Wtek in its Malmberget mine way back to 2003. Running the mining activities under the Active RFID scanner, the mining company now profoundly says that RFID tags has deep impact on mining safety.
As part of the RFID program, the mining company has pointed out several access points for the deployment of RFID technology inside the mine. It tagged all workers with Wtek tags. These tags would be identified and registered when they are within the reading range of the access point. The maximum range is just about 100 meter, which enables registrations at high-speeds.
The entire safety system includes Access Control Schedules, Automatic Routing and Work alone feature. Access control schedules raises alarms when unauthorized workers reside in an undesired area. While the Work Alone feature sets mining time for the workers. The workers should leave the mine before this deadline. Otherwise, an alarm will be sounded.
In this way, the mining company ensures safety and security of the workers.
